Anti-theists and Self-evident Truth

‘In our culture, even the most passionate atheist cannot help having been influenced by the Judeo-Christian worldview that shaped Western civilization.’ –Jeff Jacoby

The American Founders appealed to the authority of the ‘Laws of Nature and Nature’s God’ to justify their belief that the unalienable rights of Life, Liberty and Property not only exist, but are given to all men on account of being made as image bearers of their Creator. This they referred to as self-evident truths much as the Bible begins with the existence of God as evident from what He has made…’the heavens declare the glory of God’ [Psalm 19:1].

It is good to see the anti-theists adopt the Natural Law argument as a basis for their morality. What they fail to understand is that the Natural Law is the Law of Conscience and reflects the Moral Law of God given in the Ten Commandments. This Law was given to reveal sin as the transgression of the Law; never was it intended as a means for fallen men to obtain righteousness or goodness by law keeping. This is the redemption that man provides for himself; it has no value before God except to further man’s condemnation.

As men suppress the knowledge of God, they cannot escape the image they bear that testifies to the self-evident truth that God exists given the evidences of His work of creation and the work of His Law written on the conscience. Men who suppress the truth of God and yet live in His world and testify to the goodness of His Law are without excuse before His judgment.
