“Deists don’t believe God answers prayer”, but being inconsistent in their world view, many of them did pray because of the godly influence of the colonial Christians.

With the advent of Newton and his law of gravity and the explanation of planetary motion, unbelieving men had an excuse based in science to distance themselves from the Reformation heritage of a sovereign and providential God. This gave rise to deism.
Not until Darwin could men totally reject the idea of God as creator of all things. This gave rise to the religious practice of radical naturalism. It is interesting that Newton would be outside the bounds of today’s so called science because he held to the belief of God as creator and sustainer of life, who is responsible for the design observed in life and in everything that exists to support life.
One quote from Newton from his work on optics is that ‘the eye did not originate apart from the knowledge of optics’. The human eye displays the characteristics of optimized design as engineered according to purpose. Newton and the men of early modern science would question the modern neo-scientists as men without purpose, pursuing a science without foundation, since they reject the first cause and only explanation why the scientific method would even exist.
The first question of science is why is there cause and effect consistency such that scientific law exists? The Darwinites have abandoned Newton’s answer and now ignore the significance of the question.
