Why does the Ten Commandments start with a prohibition against false gods and false worship? Why must men be commanded in the right worship of the true God?
The history of man reveals his propensity for the worship of false gods of every sort.
Modern man shakes his head at his ancestors who were given to idolatry, but is deceived by the same tendency, having accepted an even greater idolatry; that is, the explanation of man’s spirituality in terms of materialism.
The answers are not to be found in the doctrines of radical naturalism. Man was created to be a worshipper of God, to know his Creator and to enjoy Him forever. But because of his sin, man is now a truth suppressor, denying what is clearly revealed about God in what exists.
God has revealed Himself in the Bible and given us a right rule of how He is to be worshipped. We who live in the age of the New Covenant have free access to God through the person and work of Jesus Christ. The nations need not be held in their idolatries for the light has come to the Gentiles. The light came to America, and we need not go the way of darkness, if we return to the old paths that lead to life and liberty and prosperity. [Jeremiah 6]
